The Wheeler family lived at The Bungalow on the cliffs at Worbarrow.

John Wheeler (1831-1913)

John was born on 25 January 1831 to Thomas Wheeler (c.1801-?) and Hannah Elizabeth Wheeler neé Hickman (-).

The family lived at Gold Street, in the All Saints district of Northampton, for over ten years. His father Thomas was a bookseller and stationer and they attended Northampton Baptist Church.

By 1851, the family had moved to London and they were living at 2, Culford Road North, West Hackney. Thomas was now an ‘office keeper’ and Hannah was a milliner. John, aged 20, was a commercial traveller.

On 1 July 1854, John, by then an accountant, married Fanny Swan in the parish church of St. John-at-Hackney.

Just seven years later, the family were living in Islington, with John overseeing a business employing 47 hands. Within a decade this had grown to 100 hands.

John and Fanny had six sons and one daughter:
● Samuel Wheeler (1855-1899)
● Alice Mary Wheeler (1856-1937)
● John Alfred Wheeler (1859-?)
● Thomas Wheeler (1861-?)
● William Wheeler (1861-1903)
● Albert John Wheeler (1864-1865)
● Frank Wheeler (1865-?)

Fanny died at Stoke Newington on 19 March 1890 aged 58. John was living at 15 Newgate Street at the time.

The following year, John then aged 60, married Mary Jane Greenwood neé Matthews.

By 1901, John and Mary Jane had moved to Winton, near Bournemouth, and they lived there for over 10 years.

John and Mary had no children of their own, but they helped raise the children of Mary’s sister Elizabeth who died when her youngest child was just 2 years old.

John died at Worbarrow on 30 November 1913 aged 82. His widow Mary Jane Wheeler and Walter Thomas Ware, father of Reggie Ware, were executors.

Mary Jane Wheeler (1852-1932) formerly Greenwood neé Matthews

Mary Jane Matthews was born at Stratford, Essex, in 1852 to John Matthews, a dock labourer, and his wife Jane.

In 1876, at the age of 24, Mary married John Greenwood, seventeen years her senior. John and Mary lived at Prittlewell in Essex. John died on 6 June 1890 and Mary Jane married widower John Wheeler as stated above.

Mary Jane died in 1932 aged 80.
