In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Tyneham like this:

TYNEHAM, a parish in Wareham district, Dorset; on the coast, 6 miles SW by S of Wareham r. station. Post town, Corfe-Castle, under Wareham. Acres, 2,915; of which 75 are water. Rated property, £1,319. Pop., 272. Houses, 61. The property is divided among four. An alien priory, a cell to Bec abbey in France, stood at Povington; and was given to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. The living is a rectory, annexed to Steeple. The church was restored and enlarged in 1835.

Some examples of individual year entries

Introduction from Kelly's Directory of Dorset 1920

TYNEHAM is a parish, in the Isle of Purbeck, bounded on the south by the English Channel, nearly 6 miles west-by-south from Corfe Castle, on the Swanage branch of the London and South Western railway and 7 south-by-west from Wareham, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Hasilor, Wareham petty sessional division and county court district. Wareham and Purbeck union, rural deanary of Purbeck, arch-deaconary of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St Mary is a small cruciform ediface of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of a chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, west porch, and a central bell-cott containing 2 bells: the north transept was a chantry chapel, belonging to the manor house; the south transept is modern: there are three monuments of Caen stone, to the Rev. William Bond, formerly rector of Steeple with Tyneham, and canon of Bristol; to William Bond esq. metropolitan police magistrate and recorder of Poole and Wareham, and to the Rev. Henry Bond esq. barrister-at-law: there is also an ancient monument with eleven shields of arms, to Henry Williams, son of John Williams, of Herrington, d. 1641: divine service was formerly performed in this parish only once on each Sunday in the year, and on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Christmas Day: in 1848 the Rev. William Bond, considering the increase of the population, gave the sum of £1,700 to the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty upon trust to pay the dividends half yearly to the rector of Tyneham, upon condition of his performing two full services, with a sermon, every Sunday and also on Good Friday and Christmas Day: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1654. the living is a rectory, with that of Steeple annexed, joint net yearly value £400, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, 19 of which are in Tyneham, in the gift of John Wentworth Garneys Bond esq. D.L., Coupe M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. Various interesting antiquities have been found in this parish and several of the barrows, which are very numerous in this neighbourhood, have been opened, and found to contain human remains, pottery and circular pieces of jet called coal money. Tyneham house, the residence of William Henry Bond esq. JP is a mansion of Purbeck ashlar, commenced in 1567 and mostly built in 1583, but considerable alterations and additions were made by the late Rev. William Bond in 1820; the east front has a porch and three gables, and a new entrance in a similar style has been made on the north side. There is no manor. The principal landowners are John Wentworth Garneys Bond esq DL, J. P. William H. Bond esq., J. P. Reginald Joseph Weld esq. and H. H. House esq. The soil is very various, but principally clay; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are barley, wheat and oats; there is also some very good pasture land. The area is 2,966 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £1,400; population in 1911, 209.

POVINGTON, one mile north, a hamlet, and formerly a manor, was, soon after the conquest, given by Robert Fitzgerald to the abbey of Bec, in Normandy. On the dissolution of alien priories by 2 Hen. V. (1416) it was given by Henry VI to Eton College, and afterwards came by exchange to the Crown, and was given by Edward VI to the Duke of Somerset; after his attainder Queen Elizabeth granted it to Edward, Earl of Hertford, who sold the demenses and copyholds to the tenants and thus extinguished the manor.

EGLISTON, anciently a manor and a hamlet, derives its name from Englin, its ancient owner; it now consists of two farms, known as North Egliston, three-quarters of a mile north-east and South Egliston 1 3/4 miles south-east and a portion of Tyneham farm.

WORBARROW is a hamlet, 1 mile south-west; BALINGTON is half a mile west;

WHITEWAY adjoins Povington, and was anciently parcel of that manor.

Index to Trade Directories

This index was prepared in 2009-10 by John Patrick and we are grateful to him for making it available to us.

It is an index of all the persons mentioned in the Tyneham sections of the Dorset trade directories. In early directories there were no separate sections for Tyneham and names from these dates are taken from the Corfe Castle and Wareham sections of the directories where the location was given as Tyneham or nearby.

This index is a finding aid only and the original directory should be consulted as many entries give more information than can be included in the index.

Names mentioned in the directory introductions are not included in the index.

In many cases there are several entries for the same person and this is because there was a significant change in their directory entry from one year to the next or they had more than one entry per year.

There are many obvious spelling and typographical errors in the directories and these have been indexed as printed in the directories. When searching for a particular name in the index and it cannot be found, it is advisable to search for alternative spellings of that name.
