The Homan Family lived at Tyneham Rectory from 1897 to 1913 while Revd. C. S. Homan was Rector. He succeeded Revd. Christopher Wordsworth and was succeeded by Revd. Edward Clifford Hawkes.

Revd. Claude Samuel Homan (1869-1947)

Claude Samuel Horan was born in Umballa, Punjab, India on 13 November 1869. He was educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge where he obtained his B.A.

In 1891 he became Curate of St. Matthias, Plymouth. On 27 April 1982 he married Adelaide Mabel Digby who was born in London in 1862. In 1893 they moved from Devon to Dorset where Claude took up the Curacy of St. Andrew’s, West Stafford. On 30 July 1894, Claude and Adelaide’s first child, a son, Digby Arden Homan, was born in Meriden, Warwickshire.

In 1896 Claude took up the position of Rector of the neighbouring parish of Winterbourne-Came with Winterbourne-Farringdon (and Incumbent of Whitcombe).

On 12 July 1896, while at Winterbourne-Came, Claude and Adelaide had twins: a boy, Claude Knox Homan, and a girl, Rachel Adelaide Homan. Unfortunately Rachel died in infancy in May 1897.

That same year, the family moved from Winterborne-Came to Tyneham, where Claude became Rector of Steeple-cum-Tyneham and also Rector of East Holme. They lived at Tyneham Rectory from 1897 to 1913.

The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Tyneham, joint net yearly value £336, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, 5 of which are in Steeple, in the gift of Nathaniel Bond esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Claude Samuel Homan B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, who is also rector of East Holme, and resides at Tyneham.

Claude remained as Rector of Steeple-cum-Tyneham until 1913 when he moved on to Frampton where he was Vicar until 1916.

While at Frampton Claude and Adelaide received the tragic news that their younger son Claude Knox Homan, the twin of daughter Rachel, had been killed in action on 18 September 1915 while serving as Lieutenant in the 6th battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment. He was just 19 years old.

Less then six months later, Claude and Adelaide were dealt a further cruel blow when they learned that their only surviving child, Digby Arden Homan had died on 12 March 1916 in British East Africa while serving with the 2nd Rhodesia Regiment. He was just 21. In the wake of these tragedies, Claude relinquished his post of Vicar.

A few years after the War, in 1921, Claude became Curate of St. Mary’s, Longfleet in Poole and then Chaplain of Costebelle in France from 1922 until 1925.

After his retirement, Claude and Adelaide lived at Hillmorton, Wyndham-road, Parkstone, Dorset. Adelaide died on 27 Feb 1947 in Poole and Claude died just over two months later on 5 May 1947 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, aged 78.
